TÍTULO DO TRABALHO:  “…uma ou outra expedição às profundezas da memória”: Arquivo, fotografia, memória e modos de escrita em Crônica Berlinense e Infância em Berlim por volta de 1900, de Walter Benjamin.

RESUMO EM PORTUGUÊS: Estudos filológicos, a crítica genética e a paulatina publicação da edição crítica das obras de Walter Benjamin, em Werke und Nachlaß [Obra e Espólio], colocam em xeque textos antes considerados estabelecidos e demandam novas propostas para compreender o pensamento do autor e descrever sua poética. O trabalho parte da leitura analítico-crítica dos textos que compõem o material de espólio relacionado a Crônica Berlinense e Infância em Berlim por volta de 1900, dando relevo à dimensão poética da escrita de Walter Benjamin. Ao escrever suas memórias, Walter Benjamin constrói um material em que a escrita autobiográfica não tem o papel de preencher a lacuna entre experiência e lembrança nem de descrever as recordações no nível do menor detalhe. Sua escrita, antes, apresenta processos e efeitos do lembrar. Nas anotações que compõem Crônica Berlinense, estão presentes lembranças e reflexões sobre a memória, ao passo que evidências fotográficas emergem das lembranças em Infância em Berlim por volta de 1900, tendo o autor assim engendrado dois textos fragmentários distintos, cada um demandando uma leitura própria, ainda que inseparável da leitura do outro, tal um rébus. A um só tempo Walter Benjamin escreve suas lembranças e coloca o ato de lembrar em cena, apresenta-o. A fotografia se torna, nesses textos, a poética da memória: é estratégia de escrita e elemento que ativa as lembranças. Considera-se que a leitura a partir do arquivo seja aquela mais adequada para o conjunto de escritos do autor e para analisar o processo de criação desses textos e compreendê-los. Acompanham o trabalho, ainda, exercícios de tradução dos escritos do autor e reflexões sobre a tarefa de traduzi-lo.

ABSTRACT: The definitive status of Walter Benjamin´s texts are challenged by most recent philology studies field, including literary studies and genetic editing, alongside the publication of new collection of Walter Benjamin´s Work, Werke und Nachlaß. Therefore, new forms of understanding the author´s thought and poetics are now in demand in the field of Walter Benjamin Studies. More prominence to Benjamin´s poetics and literary contribution is given by this research, by analyzing the texts that form the Berlin Chronicle andBerlin Childhood around 1900´s estate. In writing his own memoirs, the author demonstrates that it is not the purpose of his autobiographical texts to fill the gap between experience and memory or describe the content of memories faithfully and in detail, but rather to present processes and effects of remembering. Benjamin notes memories and reflections on memory in his Chronicle and uses a (more prominent) photographic language in Childhood, engendering two different fragmentary texts, each deserving specific, though inseparable, readings. Walter Benjamin writes his recollections, but also creates, literarily, texts about the act of remembering – or a verbal staging of such act. Photography becomes, here, the poetics of memory: it is a strategy of writing, but it is also what triggers one to remember. I will argue that clues for the transformation of the texts that belong to the 350-page myriad of the Berliner Kindheit Nachlaß lie within the texts themselves and reading the archive is the most appropriate methodology to understand them under new light. This research is also written from the translator-critic perspective, thus bringing reflections on the task of translating along the analytical work.
