The Graduate Program in Literature Studies at UFF – PosLit/UFF was approved by Capes in 2009 and began operating in 2010. It has its origins in the former Graduate Program in Letters, created in 1970, which also originated the Graduate Program in Language Studies.
In 2006, the Graduate Program in Letters discussed the creation of two graduate programs, one in Literary Studies and one in Language Studies, given the level of consolidation, development and scientific production of the two areas. Both areas were balanced and quite homogeneous in terms of academic production, number of faculty members (about 25) and students (about 160). The split of the nearly-40-decade-old Graduate Program in Letters in two different programs was designed with the objective of achieving a more accurate academic profile according to Capes as well as better conditions for the development and expansion of each of the areas. Therefore, this change met academic and administrative demands, which allowed the two new programs to be established in a more organic, specific and consistent way.
In 2007, following the work of a committee especially designated to prepare the creation of the two programs, the proposal was approved by the three collegiate bodies in the frame of which the Graduate Program in Letters operated: the Center for General Studies, the Institute of Letters and the program itself. In 2008, the proposal was approved in the two highest instances of the university: the Teaching and Research Council and the University Council. In 2009, the proposal was submitted to Capes and approved in October of the same year with a score of five. In 2010, the two programs began to operate effectively.
In 2022, in the CAPES Quadrennial Evaluation, the Graduate Program in Literature Studies received a score of seven, the maximum grade, which marks its consolidation and internationalization. The main objectives of PosLit are to train qualified personnel of high professional level for the exercise of research and/or teaching in Higher Education in the area of Letters, as well as to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of Literary Studies. At the Master’s level, the Program aims to train people capable of doing research and teaching Literature primarily in the Southeast Region, but also in other regions of the country. At the Doctoral level, the Program aims to train doctors with autonomy and excellence in research and teaching in Higher Education, people committed to seeking different sources of information and alternative points of view as well as promoting intellectual productivity beyond the limits of the classroom and the mandatory curriculum.
